I feel it is stupid to feel that you have to ask someone how they are, and also to feel you have to say you are fine when you are not.

In France, we usually just say "Hello" when entering a shop. So I was very surprised when I went to Canada for studies, and shop employees greeted me with "Hello, how do you do?". Flabbergasted. Stammered and probably looked like an idiot when I answered "I am well, thank you, and you?". Just try to say that it depends on the language and culture.
